Can I have Breast Cancer and Feel Fine...?

Breast Cancer is a scary subject, but we cannot pretend that it does not exist - breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Depending on the type of breast cancer you have and how aggressive it is, you can have it for months or even years without knowing. This is why it is imperative that you perform regular self-examinations and if you notice any changes in your breasts, see your GP. Early detection saves lives.
Important: Many people do not realize that men have breast tissue and that they can develop breast cancerTherefore, whilst breast cancer occurs mainly in women, men can get it too and should also be performing self examinations!

Performing a self-examination on your breasts can seem quite a daunting task at first, but don't worry Future Dreams is here to help with their informative 'Change and Check' poster for the signs and symptoms to check for:

5 Top Tips for Checking Yourself

  1. Check regularly: CoppaFeel recommends checking your breasts monthly. This allows you to keep on top of any changes as well as figuring out what's 'normal' for your chest. Why not set a reminder in your phone for the first Monday of the month?

  2. Know the signs: Checking monthly is great - but you have to know what you're looking for! Screenshot the leaflet above or keep the one we send out with all our pink orders as a reference. Breast Cancer doesn't always show up as a lump, so if you notice any changes, speak to a doctor.

  3. Remember your collarbone and armpits: Breast tissue isn't only found in your breasts! It goes all the way up to your collarbone as well as underneath your armpits, so make sure you check the whole area.

  4. Have a feel in the shower: It doesn't really matter where you check yourself, but the shower can be an easy option. Remember that changes in your breasts can occur naturally - hormones and menstrual cycles can play a big part!

  5. If you're not sure, get checked out: If you notice a change or symptom, go and see your doctor - they're the only one who can refer you for further tests and checks. This is essential as an early diagnosis could mean a better chance of successful treatment. If you're worried about how the doctor might perceive you if the lump turns out not to be cancerous, remember that doctors encounter a wide range of conditions every day, and they understand that not all lumps are cancerous. They are there to help you and address your concerns, regardless of the outcome.

Y.O.U Underwear x Future Dreams:

Breast cancer is a cause close to our hearts, with Sarah's mum being diagnosed with it several years ago and so many close friends and family being affected. For this reason we were keen to support a breast cancer charity, so we partnered with Future Dreams when we launched our range of pink products back in 2021.

For every pair of Pink Y.O.U Underwear that you purchase, £1 is donated to the wonderful Future Dreams

Why Future Dreams...? Sarah, our CEO and Founder, says:

The moment I discovered Future Dreams and the amazing work they do to support people affected by breast cancer I wanted to help. My Mum had breast cancer a few years ago and it is prevalent in my family, so this collaboration is really personal for me. I love our new soft pink colour and I hope it’s really popular so we can make a meaningful difference to Future Dreams.”

We hope that this collaboration with Future Dreams will increase our impact and to get conversations started around breast cancer awareness, self-checking and supporting further research. If you want to help Future Dreams further they are always looking for volunteers and/or donations - plus they have many exciting fundraising events! For example, from October 2023, Future Dreams has partnered with the St Pancras Hotel Group to host monthly music evenings in the exclusive Hokus Pokus Cocktail Bar, The Megaro Hotel, London!
