Sustainable Barbie Fashion

Sustainable Barbie Fashion

In 2023, we are certainly living in a ‘Barbie World’.

The highly anticipated Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is currently dominating the box office, and has driven social media wild for months. In particular, ever since early photos were released of Barbie and Ken rollerblading in their multicoloured lycra jumpsuits, fans have been obsessed with Barbie-fashion or ‘Barbiecore’. Everyone wants to go see Barbie, everyone wants a Barbie, and everyone wants to be Barbie.

Unfortunately, whilst the new Barbie movie champions equality and inclusiveness, the very nature of a plastic toy and the rise of Barbie-related fast-fashion conflicts with our core value of sustainability. Thankfully, Mattel (Barbie’s Manufacturer) has set itself a goal of using 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials in both their products and packaging. We are somewhat sceptical of their ‘The future of pink is green campaign’, but we do hope that they deliver on this promise. We do, however, also recognise that consumers have the power to change their consumption habits too - we are here to help you realise your Barbie dreams (without harming the planet) with our ‘Look good, Feel good, Do Good’ mantra!

LOOK GOOD:

The foundation of any outfit is the underwear – so where best to start when trying to channel Barbie than Barbie lingerie or Barbie underwear. If there could only be one word to describe Barbie and her style it would be ‘Pink’ – all the shades of pink! We may not have slogan Barbie underwear, but we do have multiple styles and designs of pink underwear perfect for both Barbies and Kens, to satisfy these pink cravings.

FEEL GOOD:

For decades, Barbie has been seen as a global icon and the standard of beauty - unfortunately, the vast majority of the globe does not fit under this ‘standard of beauty’. Mattel recently released a ‘Plus-sized’ Barbie, and the movie does fortunately boast a diverse cast of body types and ethnicities, but there is still some way to go before Barbie truly celebrates and uplifts everyone. At Y.O.U Underwear, celebrating all bodies and helping everyone feel comfortable and confident in themselves is something we feel very passionately about. Our women’s sizing range runs from UK 6-22 and our men’s from S to 3XL. We also have a new range of more supportive bras and mid-rise bikinis. What’s more, our underwear is made of 100% organic cotton that is both long lasting and immensely comfortable; it has even been described as ‘buttery’ and ‘skin-like’! (Gian, Google review).

DO GOOD:

Whilst we disagree that ‘Life in Plastic is fantastic’, we wholly agree with Barbie that ‘It feels good to be part of something bigger than yourself’ (Barbie: Mermaid Tale, 2012) and that ‘the power to change the world has been inside you all along’ (Barbie in Princess Power (2015)). That is why our underwear is as good for the world as it is for your wardrobe: with a buy-one-give-two promise, we donate two pairs of underwear for every pair that is purchased. For every pair of pink underwear that is purchased, we donate £1 to breast cancer charity Future Dreams. Future Dreams is a wonderful charity that raises funds for Support, Awareness and Research for those touched by Breast Cancer.
