5 Top Places to Visit in Oxford

The City of Oxford is the perfect location for a day out or weekend away. Combining awe-inspiring historic landmarks with quaint cobbled streets and beautiful gardens, there is no shortage of things to do.

So plan your ideal Oxford day out (or weekend trip) with our top 5 places to visit. All of these stops are within easy walking distance of each other and will take you through a scenic route, with plenty of opportunity to stop for coffee, ice cream, or a pint!

1. Christ Church Cathedral and Meadow

This ancient Church of England cathedral dates back to at least the 1500's and was built as the college chapel to Christ Church college. This beautiful building is surrounded by beautiful meadow land running alongside the river. Stroll through the beautiful gardens at the entrance gate before taking a walk around the meadow to watch the boats go by.

2. The Covered Market

Oxford's best attraction! (okay we may be biased). After starting your day in Christ Church, head up into town to visit the bustling Covered Market, a 250 year old indoor market currently home to around 50 traders. The market is an Oxford staple where you will find souvenirs, handmade treasures, unique gifts, sweet treats, and much more. Pop into one of the independent cafes for a quick coffee before heading to the Y.O.U Oxford shop where you will find a wonderful range of local and sustainable products and gifts as well as the comfiest organic cotton underwear which might just change your life...

3. Radcliffe Camera

Now that you've refuelled and picked up some local goods, make your way to the Radcliffe Camera, a working Oxford University library which is nearly 300 years old! This Palladian style building is a must visit sight for Oxford, but don't forget to walk through the other Bodleian Library buildings to experience the range of beautiful architecture on display.

4. The Bridge of Sighs

The next sightseeing stop on our list is Oxford's bridge of sighs, a small but beautifully intricate covered stone bridge joining two Hertford College buildings. Officially named Hertford Bridge, it has become known as the Bridge of Sighs thanks to its resemblance to the famous Venice landmark. In this area, you can also visit the Sheldonian Theatre, the Weston Library, and Blackwells Bookshop.

5. Turf Tavern

All of this sightseeing probably has you in need of a break by now, so to round off your day, follow the narrow alley round to the Turf Tavern pub garden where you can enjoy a refreshing drink in the sun.

Hopefully this article has you inspired to book a trip to Oxford, land with the train from London taking less than an hour, what's not to love!

Make sure to pop in and say hi when you do!
